The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS) will develop the next generation of miniaturised optical systems with functionalities beyond what is conceivable today.

By harnessing the disruptive concept of meta-optics, we will overcome complex challenges in light generation, manipulation and detection at the nanoscale. Our research outcomes will underpin future technologies, including real-time holographic displays, artificial vision for autonomous systems to see the invisible, wearable medical devices and ultra-fast light-based Wi-Fi, meeting the evolving demands of Industry 4.0.

The Centre was established in January 2021 and will run for seven years, training a cohort of Higher Degree Research students and Postdoctoral Research Fellows during its lifetime. These researchers will be working on fundamental and applied research working collaboratively between the Centre’s various nodes and with our external academic and industry partners to deliver real-world solutions to current problems. .

TMOS is building a meta-optics workforce that contributes to the dissemination of meta-optics knowledge and skills throughout a range of industries. We are a key player in the next technology revolution.

EQUS is the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems.  Our mission is to engineer the quantum future by building quantum machines that harness the quantum world for practical applications.  

We are solving the most challenging research problems at the interface of basic quantum physics and engineering, working with partners in industry to translate our discoveries into practical applications and devices, and training a new generation of scientists in cutting-edge research, innovation and entrepreneurialism.

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology (CQC²T) is focused on delivering world-leading quantum research to develop full-scale quantum systems – encompassing ultra-fast quantum computation, secure quantum communication and distributed quantum information processing.

With Australian Research Council funding extended through to 2025, CQC²T will build on its fundamental advances in quantum information research in silicon, optical and networking platforms to develop full-scale quantum systems.

Australian researchers have established global leadership in quantum information. Having developed unique technologies for manipulating matter and light at the level of individual atoms and photons, we have demonstrated the highest fidelity, longest coherence time qubits in the solid state; the world’s longest-lived quantum memory in the solid state; and the ability to run small-scale algorithms on photonic qubits.
